Heart of a Dog

Heart of a Dog | Documentary | France / USA , 2015 | 73 min
Director: Laurie Anderson
Casting: Archie, Bob Currie, Heung-Heung Chin, Jason Berg, Paul Davidson

"Hello, little bonehead. I'll love you forever." So begins HEART OF A DOG, Laurie Anderson's cinematic journey through love, death and language. Centering on Anderson's beloved rat terrier Lolabelle, who died in 2011, HEART OF A DOG is a personal essay that weaves together childhood memories, video diaries, philosophical musings on data collection, surveillance culture and the Buddhist conception of the afterlife, and heartfelt tributes to the artists, writers, musicians and thinkers who inspire her. Fusing her own witty, inquisitive narration with original violin compositions, hand-drawn animation, 8mm home movies and artwork culled from exhibitions past and present, Anderson creates a hypnotic, collage-like visual language out of the raw materials of her life and art, examining how stories are constructed and told — and how we use them to make sense of our lives.

The Great Beauty

La grande bellezza | Drama / comedy | France / Italy , 2013 | 136 min
Director: Paolo Sorrentino
Casting: Carlo Buccirosso, Sabrina Ferilli, Toni Servillo

The story of an aging writer who bitterly recollects his passionate, lost youth. A portrait of today's Rome. Rome, in the splendor of summer. Tourists flock to the Janiculum Hill: a Japanese man collapses, felled by such beauty. Jep Gambardella – a handsome man with irresistible charm, despite the first signs of ageing – enjoys the city’s social life to the full. He attends chic dinners and parties, where his sparkling wit and pleasant company are always welcome. A successful journalist and inveterate seducer, in his youth he wrote a novel which earned him a literary award and a reputation as a frustrated writer. He masks his disenchantment behind a cynical attitude, which makes him view the world with bitter lucidity. On the terrace of his Rome apartment which overlooks the Coliseum, he hosts parties where “the human apparatus” – that was the title of his novel – is stripped bare, and where the comedy of nothingness is played out. Weary of his lifestyle, Jep sometimes dreams of taking up his pen again, haunted by memories of a youthful love which he still hangs on to. But will he ever manage it? Can he overcome this profound disgust for himself and others, in a city whose dazzling beauty sometimes leads to paralysis?

From Afar

Desde Allá | Drama | Mexico / Venezuela , 2015 | 90 min
Director: Lorenzo Vigas
Casting: Alfredo Castro, Jericó Montilla, Luis Silva

Armando is a man that doesn’t have the capacity to fully relate emotionally with others. In a certain way he is an autistic in his city. The Spanish title can be translated literally to “From Afar.” It’s a reference to the distance and separation between Armando and the objects of his desire – his “look but don’t touch” attitude. It also has something to do with the separation with the object of his obsession, represented by the older businessman. The idea of making a film about a man who struggles to connect emotionally to others was very attractive to me.
